On-line Directory: BAME Consultants

The GLA Mayor’s Commission on African and Asian Heritage and the Cultural Leadership Programme have joined forces with the Museum’s Association to compile an on-line directory of black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) freelancers, sole traders and consultants, working within the cultural heritage sector including: museums, libraries, archives and the built environment.

The aim is to highlight the breadth, range and expertise of BAME freelancers and practitioners across the sector.

The MA website's Find A Supplier section has been enhanced with over 150 new entries from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals.

As well as supporting an increased public awareness of cultural diversity issues, these new listings will prove invaluable to any museum, gallery or heritage organisation wishing to enhance their network of consultants and bring fresh perspectives on issues from audience to website development.

Website users can search by name or keyword, and can also find the new directory entries under cultural diversity in the company category search.

The inclusion of these listings follows a key recommendation of the report Delivering Shared Heritage, published In July 2005 by the Mayor's Commission on African and Asian Heritage, emphasising the need to develop a directory of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Experts for the cultural sector.

This requirement was further endorsed by the Commission's Heritage Diversity Task Force, which was established in 2006 in response to the sector's call for increased access to more BAME expertise to inform an inclusive cultural heritage sector.
