Coaching, Mentoring and Facilitation

Coaching, mentoring and facilitation are forms of reflective learning designed to enhance personal and professional development. Use the links below to find out more about what coaching, mentoring and facilitation involve and how they can support you, both personally and professionally, in your development as a leader in the cultural and creative industries.

Coaching

‘I was in a relatively senior position, and experiencing tension in my role…I wanted to identify my personality strengths and the circumstances under which they could flourish in a professional capacity, to explore the tension I was experiencing and see if my skills would be better placed elsewhere.’ Trainee theatre producer

Mentoring

Mentoring is a one-to-one helping relationship in which one individual supports the professional development of another. It is very similar to a coaching relationship and can involve elements of coaching but the main emphasis is on the mentor using his/her professional expertise and experience in a given area to support the development of the less experienced client, or mentee.

Facilitation

In the context of development, the facilitator is someone who is appointed to enable others to learn, and facilitation is the process by which participants in a group setting agree to be actively involved in their own learning. This is known as action learning.
