Facilitation

An action learning set is one in which a group of people, working in related fields or at similar levels of responsibility, come together for a contracted period of regular meetings, and are led or guided by an external facilitator.

At the end of the initial contract, the group members decide whether or not to continue meeting for a further contracted period, and whether or not they will continue to work with the facilitator, or work alone, using the questioning and listening skills they have developed through the process.

In an action learning set participants are able to raise difficult questions, discuss sensitive issues, and share their learning in a supportive environment, secure in the knowledge that ‘what’s said in the room stays in the room’.
