Culture in a Changing Context
Kings Place: 26 April 2010: 10.30 - 4pm
The Debate
The UK is currently experiencing extreme challenge on both environmental and economic fronts. In previous decades, the arts and culture have gained the reputation for pushing society’s boundaries, probing and challenging what is known and what is possible. But, in the first decade of the New Millennium, technology, modern science and the economic responses to environmental realities have shifted the boundaries faster and further than ever before. What was previously fixed is now uncertain – what was clear and tangible is now intangible. How could the cultural sector keep apace and maintain creative leadership against this constantly changing context?
Culture in a Changing Context brought together leading economists, scientists, experts and commentators from a variety of fields to share their perspectives on the key issues and influences on society today. Sharing the debating space with the views and responses of key cultural activists, this dynamic debate probed the expectations, contributions and responsibilities of culture in modern society.
