The “Powerbrokers Action Learning Set” (PALS) programme has been designed to provide a safe environment where mid-career leaders can quickly share their journeys, successes, dilemmas or/and to take the time and space to experiment with ideas they may feel uncomfortable divulging within their organisations, to clients or colleagues.

Space is given to explore difficult situations or challenges without judgement or bias. Additional security is given in the knowledge that the "Chatham House" rules concept forms the foundation of the PALS peer groups.

Supported by the PLP delivery team two sets will be based in London and at least one set in the North East, Yorkshire, and in the Midlands. Each set will comprise of a maximum number of six participants. These groups will run from March to October 2010.

An afternoon session has been planned across six dates and will last approximately 4 to 4 1/2 hours. The first session maybe take somewhat longer in order to introduce the PALS concept to the group and to break the ice among the participants. Although there are six sessions in the programme, four will be facilitated by one of the PLP team. A key concept for the PALS programme is the journey and built-in support for the group towards meeting on their own for the fourth and fifth sessions - to stretch themselves to lead and to encourage one another in their journeys. The sixth session will be attended by its PLP facilitator, with a key emphasis of encouraging the sustainability of the group after the programme close.

PALS members will have access to their team facilitator for additional one-to-one support for the duration of the PALS programme.

Preparation and Feedback

Each participant will be supported prior to attending the first group session via a telephone conversation (or where logistically feasible in a "face-to-face" meeting) where they will hear about what to expect and how to prepare in order to fully participate.

Using a customised version of the "action learning set protocols", a "razor" focused sharing process will be used to encourage the members to prioritise two issues for each session that they wish to share, to talk it through or "present" the topic. Participants will then be encouraged to invite open questions from the other members. They may wish to revisit earlier subject matter later in the programme; however the decision about content will always be self-determined.

The facilitator will take the participants through the PALS principles to prepare participants to build confidence to lead and self-facilitate future sessions. By the end of the programme the participants will have collected individual chapters or tales of their journey or their processes. The facilitator will encourage the group to develop a mutually agreed methodology of how those experiences might be shared and recorded for the final PALS session.

Group Dynamics

As applications to Powerbrokers programmes are open, the decision about the composition of the groups will be based on an assessment of the broadly-based leadership journeys that the applicants are pursuing. It is anticipated that a balance in the groups will be found in terms of the various stages of professional and career development. Applicants will say why and how the PALS programme will be a benefit to them.

PALS groups have been established inLondon, Yorkshire and Tyneside. Applications are open for groups in the Midlands (based in Nottingham) and a second group in London. Spaces are available for these two groups. To apply please contact powerbrokers@medarpysden.com.
